Guess what?  We met another tribe called the Mandan Indians. When we met them we hired a girl named Sacagawea and her husband Charbonneau, both are hard names! Sacagawea is very good-natured at speaking the Shoshone language!  Then the Indians gave us directions to the Mountains, we thought that was very kind. The Corps and I thought it was interesting that the Indians could ride bareback. We always rode with a saddle!

          The Corps and I had to winter at Fort Mandan. You can’t believe how hard it is to hunt in the winter. We have to hunt for food constantly! Most animals are hibernating so it’s hard to find food. Right now I wish that it was summer rather than winter. Maybe the Indians could help us find food!!!

          I am the doctor of the crew. I treat injuries and frostbite. I even helped Sacagawea give birth to Pomp. I never knew I could do that. But after all she’s done for us it was worth it. One of our crew members had to get shot and I found out that there was nothing I could do.

     We ate and drank the food at Camp River Dubois. The men ate berries that they picked, corn bread that we made by our own hands, beef jerky that we made,   and nuts that we picked. We also drank hot chocolate we made ourselves.

          We were located in St. Louis Kentucky. We were located at the eastern side of Mississippi. They were boarder at the United States in Louisiana territory which Thomas Jefferson bought and it belongs to the U.S.A. France owned the land but Spain ruled the land.

          We did some Daily activities. We played marbles, a Native American game, checkers and dice. The men trained military discipline and we hunted.

          We needed some weapons. We bought guns, tools sextant, camp supplies, equipment and gifts for the Indians to make peace.
